Combined Recycling Process

Cambridge Electric Cement have developed a process wherein old cement powder is used instead of lime-flux in steel recycling via melting in an Electric Arc Furnace (EAF). As the steel melts, the flux forms a slag that floats on the liquid steel, to protect it from oxygen in the air. After the recycled steel is tapped off, the liquid slag is cooled rapidly in air, and ground up into a powder, this powder is virtually identical to the clinker which is the basis of new Portland cement. Steel and cement can therefore be recycled under the same conditions, resulting in avoided emissions both from the decarbonation of limestone for cement making and the production of the lime flux normally used in the EAF.
